Experience barefoot luxury in a converted wine tank on a Greek beach, at Dexamenes Boutique hotel

A stay at Dexamenes is like nothing you’ve ever experienced. Waking up in your four-poster bed with a direct view of one of Greece’s rawest, untouched beaches. Having a private dinner in an immense former wine tank under the stars. Riding a horse along the beach, the waves splashing at your toes. Working with an architecture studio, Nikos Karaflos meticulously restored an abandoned 1920s wine factory into the vision of modern, minimalist luxury, Dexamenes.

The brutal, industrial lines that make up the bones of the old wine tanks are softened by the impeccable softness of the white sandy beach, the natural colors and textures woven through the interior, and the warmth and passion of the hosts themselves. The Dexamenes restaurant strives to work only with producers and suppliers who are seriously committed to sustainability and source its products from as close to home as possible.

This is a hotel that is committed to excellence. Excellence, perhaps, the likes of which you may never have seen, but excellence all the same.

My time at Dexamenes in Greece’s Peloponnese was truly incredible, but what made the experience as great as it was were the people who made it feel like home. From the reception, to the restaurant, to the beach, the level of kindness, professionalism, and hospitality was top-notch. Prior to my visit, I read numerous positive reviews which were a testament of how the environment, architecture, interior, and exterior elements make you feel so relaxed - and I could not agree more. You can feel it instantly as you enter onto the property, and even more so throughout your visit of several days. George and Sotiria were professional, knowledgeable, and very hospitable through my entire visit, and I look forward to recharging my batteries, relaxing, and spending more time at Dexamenes in the near future.

Where to start with how wonderful this hotel and all the staff are! We stayed for 5 nights in a beachfront wine tank and it was incredible. All of the staff are so friendly and knowledgable about the hotels history and transformation. All of our dining experiences were exceptional - from the sunset dinner, lunch on the beach and the machina restaurant. Breakfast too was an absolute highlight with so many options. The Silo dining experience in the wine tank rivalled some Michelin dining experiences with a beautiful wine pairing. We felt incredibly sad to be leaving after our time of relaxation here. It is a beautiful hotel with a beautiful team and we are already recommending it to everyone we know. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

We had a truly relaxing and pampering experience staying at Dexamenes. Everything about this place is laid back and urged you to slow down and enjoy the moment. All you need is inside the hotel, from the beach right in front of the rooms (with sunbeds and snack / drinks service), to breakfast or dinner. There are plenty of spots to enjoy the sunset or just relax during the day. Even though the hotel was at full capacity, it never felt crowded. The service from all personnel was excellent and attentive while discreet. It was a truly relaxing and enjoyable stay.

FANTASTIC ! ! !One of the best holiday experiences ever. Great if you are looking for simple, effortless luxury. There is great attention to detail and the staff is super-friendly, cordial, and helpful. The owner / manager has obviously done a great job in creating a team spirit, and this is not an easy feat in remote Greek areas. Kudos to the entire team! One can easily stay in the hotel for 4-5 days without venturing out. Access from Athens is relatively easy, there is dedicated parking, and the beach is only a few meters away from the sea-view suites. The breakfast is clearly as good as it can get. Not only the à la carte menu is generous, but also all ingredients are excellent, which makes the culinary experience another attraction of the hotel. The only thing to improve is the drinks’ prices (and especially wine bottles and wine by the glass), which are disproportionately high.

Beautiful hotel with outstanding service. From the hotel history, architecture and specifically the delicious food we really enjoyed every aspect of our vacation. We had the chance to have dinner in the wine tank, which was a strongly recommended unique experience. Thank you to all the staff for creating a relaxing and memorable stay. We hope to come back soon again!

The hotel is beautiful and its history is great. However it is very overpriced for what it is…Rooms are beautiful and the beach view is spectacular. The staff is very nice and helpful. The restaurant is extremely disappointing : the food seemed reheated or overcooked… underwhelming taste wise considering their prices and it’s not like you have any alternative in the area as it is a low end/dirty seaside resort. For instance, we stayed at another design hotel (The Manna) with the same price range and the food there was extraordinary. The bar is overpriced… 15 euros for a very sweet and meh cocktail (it’s cheaper in most fancy places in Paris…)

Best hotel in Greece. 1 of the best restaurants in Greece. It’s not the most beautiful beach but it’s still nice and fun. Can’t wait to come back.Edit:We returned for another week 1 year later, this time with our newborn daughter. The hotel is still perfect, the staff is extremely accommodating, helpful and nice. They’ve assisted us with our special requests around our newborn daughter and SUP, and everyone always had a positive attitude and a smile. Thank you Dexamenes and please stay perfect, until next time.

One of the best (if not the best) design hotel experiences we have had in Greece: amazing design, zen feeling, perfect size and location, impeccable service and totally relaxing - great whine and food

What an incredible place! Touring Greece on our bicycles, we booked randomly two hours prior arriving as the photos looked nice but we were not expecting such a perfect hotel and restaurant. The former winery has been beautifully refurbished and the landscape architect did an amazing job. We had a sea view suite overlooking the quiet and clear water beach. The food was absolutely delicious with a lot of attention to details and succulent tastes. And the staff was welcoming and so friendly. We hope to come again for a longer stay this time.

The perfect hotel.Stayed six nights in a seaside view room. Each day was excellent. The food and wine are exceptional; the staff are so friendly and professional (special thanks to Vasilis; Nico; Victoras; Ana; Sophia; Irine; Geanina); the grounds and rooms are stunning - the shower and bedding are especially luxurious.Refined aesthetic without feeling stuffy or pretentious in any way - not an easy balance to strike. What a special place. Hope to return annually.

Boutique Hotel
34 Rooms

What we liked the most

  • The way that the natural environment subtly penetrates the industrial exterior by way of trailing vines and indoor plants
  • Feeling the cool brushed concrete of the floors on bare feet
  • Falling asleep to the sound of the gently crashing waves, and nothing else
  • Planning an activity for inside the vast wine tank, be it a starlit dinner or a yoga class
  • Having breakfast on the private beach-facing patio under the canopy

Rooms Overview

Staying at Dexamenes is truly an exceptional experience. Where else would you spend the night in a wine tank that has been carefully converted into a stunning bedroom with the help of glass, steel and timber to form a supremely minimalist, almost Zen-like aesthetic? Each of the 34 suites reflects the pared-down cool of the architect’s vision while comprising all the comforts necessary to create a sanctuary for sleep and relaxation.

Beachfront Suites

3 guests Private terrace View into the sea

These 9 30sqm units have been designed to let the abundant light spread into every corner. The king-size bed is positioned directly in front of the patio doors so you can drift off and wake up in front of the redemptive ocean view and next to it is a sofa/single bed for extra guests or children. Also featuring a private patio with a comfortable seating area and a raised walkway leading directly to the sand.

Courtyard Suites

3 guests Private terrace View into the courtyard

Looking onto the tranquil courtyard, where the newly-planted vines are just starting to flourish, these 17 suites showcase the hotel’s characteristic industrial-chic aesthetic. With clean lines, brushed concrete and muted natural shades, the Courtyard Suites represent 17 sanctuaries at the heart of the old factory. From the sunny private patio to the minimalist en-suite, the Greek sun enters the space and fills it with its warm glow.

Backyard Suites

2 guests Private terrace

Ideal for those seeking peace and privacy, the 8 Backyard suites feature the stunning, pared-down décor that Dexamenes exemplifies, while still providing the utmost in comfort and luxury. Natural mattresses, a spacious bathroom with a large shower and double sinks and a quiet backyard patio give these converted wine tanks a truly singular appeal.

Taste the flavors

Fine dining

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served across three unique locations at Dexamenes: the Ex-Engine Room Restaurant, the Beachfront Bar and The Beach itself. There is a particular charm to eating under the mulberry trees in the restaurant’s courtyard, with fruits from the same trees scattered across your plate. The chef’s creativity has no limits, except that the ingredients must be as locally sourced as possible, and dishes range from lightly seared sea bass fillets with puréed local vegetables to homemade pasta, vegan moussaka and the chef’s take on the classic Greek salad. Not to mention the in-house sommelier, dedicated to showing guests the best of the country’s wine.

Focus on sustainability

Figs

Like the fig tree roots, the property is constantly addressing many sustainable tourism areas and excelling in most fields.

  • Local businesses were engaged in the construction and design of the hotel using upscaled and recycled materials. The historical structures are preserved and complemented with design elements to create a luxurious sustainable complex.
  • The hotel is exclusively equipped with custom made furniture commissioned to local craftsmen except for the natural mattresses (that are from a Greek brand; though)
  • The Dexamenes restaurant strives to work only with producers and suppliers who are seriously committed to sustainability and sources its products from as close to home as possible. The staff are also lovingly cultivating grape and currant vines in the hotel grounds, as a tribute to the building’s viticultural past

Explore the location

Dexamenes is situated a 3-hour drive from Athens International airport, on Kourouta beach. The nearest town is Amaliada, a typical Greek seaside town where you’ll find stunning, quiet monasteries and churches. Along the waterfront, discover cosy taverns for a fresh seafood lunch as well as plenty of activities, from horseback riding to windsurfing.
