Locanda Al Colle: House of an art lover in the heart of Tuscany

Locanda al Colle is perched above the sweeping Tuscan landscape. An atmosphere of calm serenity reigns in this former farmhouse dating back to 1715. The Locanda al Colle seamlessly melds the comforts of a luxury hotel with the intimacy and charm of a traditional rustic inn.

Typical hotel features such as a reception desk, room service, or televisions are noticeably absent. You are instead invited to contemplate the artworks or the sweeping coastal views. Take a look at the private collection of Modern Art adorning the walls, and admire the careful nooks of art dispersed throughout the property. You may prefer drifting dreamily from the saltwater pool to the shady, lavender-scented terrace. The on-site chef invites you to eat family-style meals on the long candlelit dinner table.

Watching the sunset from one of the rooms’ private terraces is truly something to behold and perfectly punctuated by a glass of cold Prosecco.

This is a very special place. I’ve read in other reviews that it is an oasis, a gem, and I agree. Would go so far as to call it a paradise. The hotel/inn is beautiful and flawlessly designed. We stayed in the Colle suite and it is very spacious, elegant and “art deco”. Ricardo is a wonderful, friendly and helpful manager, and helped plan our day trips. Everyone who works there is very kind and hospitable - it really feels like home once you arrive, except in the Tuscan hillside with a distant view of the sea, surrounded by flowers, plants, candles and a picture perfect pool in a garden. The food is delicious, prepared by chef Gianluca and team (another wonderful, funny and happy guy, multilingual as well). We took some excursions to neighboring towns (Lucca, Petrasanta), so the location is great, but frankly it is most fun and a full experience to just relax at Locanda and soak it all in.Lastly, this was a delayed honeymoon for us, and we happened to bring along our 6 month old son. I checked with Ricardo first and they welcome babies, even though the setting and ambience is certainly peaceful, romantic and quiet and very “adult”. Ricardo and everyone were so lovely interacting with our son. Through our 1 week stay, he was the only child at the inn, and the staff were so attentive to his needs and seemed to relish and enjoy having him there, always smiling at him, engaging him, making us all feel at home. Truly one of our favorite trips because of this place.

Locanda al Colle is an amazing and elegant place to stay. Riccardo has done a fantastic job decorating the property. The art and furniture in the rooms and common spaces is so tasteful (and interesting). The breakfast and dinners are delicious. It is truly a small oasis of relaxation- we didn’t even leave the property on a rainy day because it’s so nice to just spend the day there.

Locanda reviewLocanda Al Colle is in a lovely location. There are hiking areas and little hill towns to explore that I wish we’d known about earlier, including a challenging hike to Mont Forato, but be sure to locate the correct trailhead. If you don’t, it will still be delightful, quiet, and interesting as you pass old stone huts and wonder about the history and culture there. Lucca is close enough to enjoy and it’s a lovely city. You can walk or bike around the ancient perimeter walk. Pisa is farther, but worth a visit and especially to see the naval museum there which is a beautifully renovated stable and gives a sense of the naval culture and history of the area, including Saint Paul’s experience imprisoned and shipwrecked. It’s easier to find a parking space on the street near the museum and walk to the main piazza where the leaning tower is afterwards. You can enjoy a bite to eat in one of the trattorias along the way or have a gelato and an espresso. Spend a wonderful day at Populonia and the Etruscan Coast about 1 hour and 45 minutes south. More locally there are a lot of events and art offerings in Pietrasanta only 10 minutes by car. One can explore the marble mines at Cava Museo Fantiscritti in Carrera, go to Grotto Antro del Corchia for an amazing tour, and visit Palazzo Mediceo in Seravezza. It would be worthwhile to arrange a tour of the Museo della Carta a Pescia. The family has been making paper there since the 1700’s. Alessio and his wife offer private tours. Another very worthwhile day can be spent visiting the small history museum in the village of St. Anna di Stazzema, where atrocities occurred on August 12,1944. It is profoundly moving and provides an opportunity for introspection in these times, as you sit afterwards in the patio of the cafe next to the church. There are many hiking trails nearby that village. Locanda al Colle’s grounds are beautiful. The owner, Ricardo’s attention to detail and artistic sense are evident throughout. So if you want to simply relax by the pool, eat amazingly innovative delicious food prepared by Gianluca, their creative warm and caring chef, swim in the clean salt water pool, relax and unwind in the meditative spaces tucked here and there, then Locanda is perfect. The staff are personable and care about their guests.

Located just outside Pisa, in Tuscany, and easily reached by train and a quick taxi ride. It's a gem located in the hills with views of the sea. An oasis from the noise and stress of Florence. Birds singing in the trees. Staff catering to your every whim. Heaven.

Staff were excellent, the pool divine and the food was incredible. You are made to feel at home, the coffee is on tap, the cakes (you can help yourself) is such a nice touch too and really delicious. Really enjoyed the little touches like the robes and flip flops in the bedrooms and meeting all the staff who learnt our names. Lots to do in the area, we drove to the beach and walked to nearby resaruants. Thanks so much team!

Best experience we had during a 10 day trip to Tuscany. The host, Ricardo, is extremely welcoming, generous and provided lots of tips for the area. Interior is highly refined with beautiful design objects and artworks. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. Staff incredibly friendly and willing to help. The pool is lovely and spent a wonderful day at the beach club. Surrounding scenery is gorgeous. Felt like staying at a friend’s house.

Taste the flavors

Breakfast Italiano

Breakfast at Locanda al Colle is worth waking up for. As well as an abundant array of buttery pastries and fresh bread (all homemade), just-squeezed juices and local cheeses and yoghurts, the chef tends to rustle up some magnificent surprise every morning: from raspberry cheesecake to velvety mushroom pastry. Eaten on the terrace in clement weather or at the kitchen on colder mornings, breakfast is naturally accompanied by that signature of Italian mornings: hot, fragrant espresso.

Al Colle Restaurant

The kitchen at Locanda al Colle is the beating heart of the building, where guests enjoy simple fare such as home-made pasta brightened with fresh locally-sourced vegetables. The meals are a product of charming chef Gian Luca’s whims and creativity, from innovative twists on local classics to near-forgotten regional recipes. Locanda al Colle serves light lunches daily and dinner three times a week. On Mondays, dinner is a relaxed, tapas-style affair while on Wednesday the dishes are meat-based and on Friday, inspiration comes from the ocean.
